Antique sextant by Negretti & Zambra, London.
A late 19th Century navigators Sextant with the classic three ring design frame.
The silver scale is engraved from -5 degrees to 155 degrees and can measure angles to 126 degrees, it is divided into 10 minute increments. The index arm has swinging scale magnifier, the silver Vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc.
This Sextant has a 6.5 inch radius.
The Sextant is engraved with the serial number 7479 and each telescope is also engraved with this number
This antique Sextant is in very good condition. It is contained within its original fitted hardwood box with carry handle. The Sextant is complete with two telescopes, a spare eyepiece, two eyepiece sun filters and mirror adjusting tool.
The last certificate of examination contained within the box is dated 1918, but this sextant was made circa 1890.
This antique celestial navigation instrument is in superb condition considering it is well over 120 years old. It is beautifully engineered and made using word class engineering skills, British navigational instrument makers were reputed to have made the best and most accurate instruments in the world.
The highly esteemed English scientific instrument manufacturing firm of Negretti & Zambra were "the most prolific and leading makers of all types of instruments during the second half of the nineteenth century. The partnership was in formed in 1850 by Henry Negretti and Joseph Warren Zambra as makers of scientific instruments. They expanded rapidly and took over the business of John Frederick Newman, a leading maker. The partnership exhibited at the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851 and won a prize medal. They held the appointment of instrument-makers to the Queen and Prince Consort."
