A presentation antique Octant made by W. Gerrard, Liverpool.
A fine late 19th century navigators Octant, brass frame with tulip frame design. Engraved on the arc W. Gerrard, Liverpool.
The silver scale is engraved from -5Â degrees to 130 degrees and can measure angles up to 112 degrees, it is divided into 10 minute increments. The index arm has swinging scale magnifier, the silver vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc.
Octant radius 7.5 inches / 19 cm.
This antique Octant is contained within its original hardwood box. It comes complete with all its accessories - two telescopes, one eye piece sun filter and mirror adjusting tool.
The finely engraved silver escutcheon plate mounted on the top of the box reads - THE SAMUELSON PRIZE presented to JOHN OLIVER ARNOLD for proficiency in PHYSICAL SCIENCE June 1876.
