 Ship's lanterns come in many different shapes and sizes, they also had many different specific uses aboard the ship. Navigation lamps ( Port, Starboard, Masthead and Stern ) indicated the direction and aspect of the ship to prevent collisions at sea. Signal lamps were used to communicate with ship or shore, others were used to light the ship's passageways, compartments and cabins.
