SHIP'S WHEEL & HELMS
Welcome to our selection of antiques ship's wheels. The ships wheel or helm was once the most frequently used part of any vessel, prior the invention of the auto pilot the ships wheel was manned permanently whilst the ship was at sea. Good seamanship skills and concentration were required to keep the vessel on a steady course. A good helmsman also enabled the navigators to plot a much more accurate estimated position which was essential for a safe passage.

A brass bound mahogany ships wheel, with eight turned spokes, one with brass acorn cap indicating the king spoke. Brass central wheel hub or boss, with brass hub cap.

A solid brass ships wheel, with eight spokes and brass central wheel hub or boss engraved BROWN BROS & CO LTD, ROSEBANK IRONWORKS, EDINBURGH. The king spoke has a different coloured handle to identify it and this usually also indicates a midships rudder angle. Diameter: 30 inches / 76 cms. SORRY THIS ITEM HAS BEEN SOLD

A brass bound mahogany ships wheel, with eight turned spokes. Cast iron central wheel hub or boss, with brass hub cap which is engraved "Watch there watch" as a reminder to the helmsman to keep a sharp lookout and steer a steady course. Diameter: 36 inches / 91 cm
