The first self contained open circuit 'Aqua -Lung' was invented in 1942 by Jacques - Yves Cousteau and Emile Gagnan, it consisted of a high pressure air cylinder that was worn on the users back and a demand regulator to deliver the air to the user - this system was patented in 1945. Cousteau also registered the 'Aqua - Lung' trademark. This 'Aqua - Lung' system was licensed to the U.S DIVERS and SIEBE GORMAN companies. This invention of this equipment made the world of underwater exploration accessible and affordable.
